How reading time is estimated

Useful character counts
The page shows total characters and characters without spaces, which helps when a platform uses a strict text limit.
Word Counter FAQ
What counts as a word?+
Groups of characters separated by whitespace are counted as words.
Is my writing saved?+
No. The text remains in the current browser session and is not uploaded by the counter.
Are spaces included in the character count?+
The main character total includes spaces. A separate figure below the editor shows characters with whitespace removed.
How are hyphenated words counted?+
A hyphenated expression without spaces is counted as one word because word boundaries are based on whitespace.
Does the counter work with languages other than English?+
It works well for languages that separate words with spaces. Results may be less useful for writing systems that do not use whitespace between words.
Why might the sentence count differ from my editor?+
The estimate looks for common sentence-ending punctuation. Abbreviations, headings, and fragments can make automated sentence counts vary.
